Vitamin B12 is a crucial ingredient for the healthy running of one’s body, as it’s needed to make red blood cells. Signs of a deficiency can develop very slowly and could affect a range of body parts. The face can hold many clues pertaining to your health including your vitamin B12 levels.

Facial pain

Facial pain can be a sign of vitamin B12 deficiency, research suggests.

The pain is sometimes felt just under the eye, in the cheekbone area, usually on only one side of the face.

The pain can also be felt across the forehead, occasionally coming down to the edge of the nose.

Pale skin

People with a B12 deficiency often look pale or have a slight yellow tinge to the skin and whites of the eyes, a condition known as jaundice.

This happens when a lack of B12 causes problems with your body’s red blood cell production.

The cause for this lies in the essential vitamin’s role in the production of DNA which is needed to make red blood cells.

Eye twitch

Our eyes too contain a lot of nerves, so when our body lacks vitamin B12 it could cause twitching.

According to the health body Medical Daily: “Eye twitching and eyelid spasms are also signs that could help pinpoint vitamin B12 deficiency.”

This uncomfortable twitching can occur in the eye and around the eye area.

Other vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms can include:

  • Weakness, tiredness, or light-headedness
  • Heart palpitations and shortness of breath
  • Pale skin
  • A smooth tongue
  • Constipation, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, or gas 
  • Nerve problems like numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and problems walking
  • Vision loss
  • Mental problems like depression, memory loss, or behavioural changes.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is easy to rectify with supplements or by dietary changes.

The body uses vitamin B12 to make red blood cells and to keep the nervous system healthy.

Vitamin B12 levels can be boosted through supplementation or by eating foods such as dairy, liver, salmon and eggs.
