Kristen Bell Says She May Be Allergic To All Alcohol Except Rosé

  • The Good Place actress Kristen Bell rarely drinks alcohol and thinks she might be allergic.
  • She says she feels like she has the flu the day after drinking alcohol.
  • Kristen tried rosé on a summer vacation with her family and had no ill effects.

It’s been around a decade since Kristen Bell has had much alcohol to drink. The Good Place actress has a very good reason for becoming a teetotaler: she thinks she’s allergic.

“I maybe have one drink a year solely because I think I might be allergic to alcohol,” Kristen tells Women’s Health in an interview for its November Mind Issue. “When I do have a drink, I experience the flu the next day. This isn’t normal. No one should have this much of a hangover over a glass of wine.”

The symptoms of an alcohol allergy, like Kristen describes, can masquerade as a bad hangover and are actually an intolerance. Alcohol intolerance is genetic and means the body can’t break down alcohol efficiently according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms can include a red, flushed face, stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or even anaphylaxis. The solution, like other allergies, is avoiding or limiting alcohol and specific ingredients in alcoholic beverages.

That’s exactly what Kristen has been doing for the last 10 years. However, she took a vacation to the shores of Lake Michigan this summer and sampled the wine of summer: rosé.

“I discovered rosé over Fourth of July., I had a glass of rosé on the beach every day when we were in Michigan with our friends,” Kristen tells Women’s Health. “I’ve got to say, I didn’t hate it. I think I would stop having it at 6 p.m. I also never had it to the point where I couldn’t take care of my kids.”

Kristen says she did enjoy the rosé she had. “So maybe a couple times a year I’ll have a glass of rosé.”
