It is normal for blood pressure to rise and fall throughout the day, but consistently high blood pressure forces your heart to work harder to pump blood around the body. The result is a heightened risk of having a heart attack. What are three drinks proven to help reduce hypertension risk?



Milk products contain key blood pressure–lowering nutrients, including calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Milk products also contain a special type of proteins, called bioactive peptides, which have been shown to have a positive effect on blood pressure control.

Its important to note that better options for milk and high blood pressure include low-fat or fat-free milk.


Keeping well hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of water daily (even more if working in hot and humid conditions) is beneficial for blood pressure.

“Dehydration causes the blood to become thicker or viscous due to the reduced water content in the blood,” said Medicine.Net.

The health site added: “Dehydration causes the kidney to release renin.

“This results in sodium and water retention in the body to correct the low fluid volume.

“This response, if constant, can cause blood pressure to be high.

“Dehydration causes the release of vasopressin hormone in the brain. This causes the blood vessels to narrow and sodium retention in the body.

“This results in high blood pressure.”

Prune juice

Prune juice has long been known to help alleviate constipation, but the drink is also a healthy treatment to help reduce hypertension risk.

This effect was reported in a 2010 study.

Researchers compared three groups: one group ate three prunes per day, a second group ate six prunes per day, and a third group didn’t eat any prunes.

The researchers reported a significant reduction in blood pressure among people who ate a single dose of three prunes per day.

People who ate six prunes per day experienced an additional reduction in systolic blood pressure.

What to avoid

“Regularly drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure over time,” warns the NHS.

Staying within the recommended levels is therefore the best way to reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure.

UK guidelines advise:

Men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week

Spread your drinking over three days or more if you drink as much as 14 units a week.
