High blood pressure: Drinking this red juice could lower your reading

High blood pressure can be hard to spot which is why regularly checking your reading and doing what you can to prevent the condition is very important. If high blood pressure is left untreated, the arteries can thicken and harden, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Your high blood pressure reading can be checked by your GP or local pharmacist, or by using a blood pressure monitor at home. And high blood pressure can often be prevented or reduced by simple lifestyle changes, such as eating healthily.

Pomegranate juice has been proven to lower blood pressure

As a general rule, experts recommend cutting down on the amount of salt in your food and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables.

But specific food and drink have also shown to be effective at keeping blood pressure in check.

Pomegranate juice has been proven to lower blood pressure.

In one study, participants with hypertension showed significant reduction in blood pressure after consuming five ounces (150ml) of pomegranate juice daily for two weeks. 

Other studies found similar effects, particularly for systolic blood pressure (the higher number on a reading). 

High blood pressure is one of the leading drivers of heart attacks and strokes.

As such, drinking pomegranate juice has also proven effective at maintaining heart health.

A review of randomised controlled trials stated it would be beneficial for heart health to drink pomegranate juice daily.

One drink you should avoid in order to keep your blood pressure in check is alcohol.

Regularly drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure over time, according to the NHS.

It advises: “Staying within the recommended levels is the best way to reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure.

“Men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week.

“Spread your drinking over 3 days or more if you drink as much as 14 units a week.”

Other lifestyle changes you should make to keep blood pressure in check is being active and cutting down on caffeine.

Adults should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week.

And drinking more than four cups of coffee a day may increase your blood pressure.

Adding a certain herb to your diet has also been found to lower blood pressure.
